2012 Summer Knight

A custom bicycle built for long-distance riding adventures on all types of roads; an “all-road” or “randonneuring” bicycle. This bicycle was built for my friend and sister-from-different-parents, sometimes known as Road Pixie.

Background

This bicycle was built following Road Pixie’s completion of her first Paris-Brest-Paris ride in 2011 on a custom-built Waterford.

The construction of this bicycle was begun in 2011 specifically as a 700C randonneuring bicycle outfitted with 30mm tires and S&S couplers. The frame was finished in 2012 and dubbed “Summer Knight”.

This Summer Knight replaced Road Pixie’s Waterford custom bicycle as her high-mileage ride. The frame was beautifully painted by Mr. Chris Kvale:

Back from paint, just after installing the bottom bracket and headset bearings.

A mishap in 2013 damaged the fork when the bicycle fell off its bike rack at 50mph while being transported. The fork was replaced:

First post-repair test ride (2013 Munger-Bungo 600km pre-ride). The fork was painted black temporarily until it could have it’s chance in Mr. Kvale’s paint queue.

Road Pixie finished the 2013 edition of London-Edinburgh-London on Summer Knight. Much fun and adventure were had during those 1,413km and five days in July. At the end of August, Road Pixie did a “cool-down” pre-ride as she finalized the route for the 600km Munger-Bungo brevet the following weekend in September. The fall weather was perfect.

Afterward

In 2014, Road Pixie had me convert Summer Knight to use 650B x 42mm wheels, cantilever brakes, and to get some custom-made stainless steel racks in preparation for the 2015 edition of Paris-Brest-Paris, but that ride went awry in the end
