“Rogue Rabbit” – Randonnée

$12,400 – New

Summary

Photos coming soon!

A bicycle built in the style of the French constructeurs of the last century with modern tubing and findings, meant for comfort on all-day explorations of paved and unpaved roads. A bicycle purpose-built for long-distance riding and randonneuring in most lighting and weather conditions.

Built around a thin-wall, high-performance, handmade frame and fork, this bicycle is purpose-built to fit wide tires, fenders, center-pull brakes, a front rack, hub dynamo, and lights. Equipped with the highest-quality components and built for long-lasting reliability, it is designed to be enjoyed during long-distance rides, but may also be admired between rides as a work of art.

The frame is finished in metallic dark red “Dark Cherry” polyurethane paint with contrasting pinkish-white paint on the head and seat tubes. The beautiful paint is accented by the mirror-like polish of the stainless steel fork crown and seat stay caps – complemented by the clear-anodized (silver) aluminum Campagnolo components and polished aluminum Paul and Phil Wood components.

The frame size is 56cm (center-to-top) with a 55.5cm (center-to-center) top tube length.

Be sure to place your order soon! A non-refundable down payment of $1,200 is required to secure your order, which is applied to the purchase price; balance due prior to shipping.

This bicycle is also available with a frame custom-sized for you at no extra cost, which includes the same paint scheme or similar scheme in two colors of your choice. Please be aware that custom frames have a six-month lead time from the date of receipt of down payment, not including time at paint.

Frame Geometry

A well-proportioned, typical “square” diamond frame: the 56cm (center-to-top) frame is sized for 650b x 42mm wheels (maximum) to give about 79.1cm (31.1”) of stand-over, depending on the tires used (here, René Herse Babyshoe Pass, which measure 39mm on the equipped Grand Bois Papillon rims). The 55.5cm top tube is sized to give good range of adjustment (with appropriate stem) for the majority of riders. The appropriate stem length will be determined at the time of purchase.

Designed for all-day comfort on paved and unpaved roads, the combination of chain stay length, 73° seat and 74° head tube angles, and fork offset provide a stable and comfortable ride that also conveys a sense of confidence when cornering or maneuvering around obstacles at any reasonable speed and climbing out-of-the-saddle.

Frame Details

Built for long-distance riding, the frame uses an optimized mix of the highest-quality, standard over-size tubing from Tange, Ishiwata, Kaisei, and KVA. Equipped with high-quality investment-cast steel lugs (Long Shen) and bottom bracket shell (René Herse), now-rare Shimano drop-forged vertical dropouts and fork ends fitted with stainless steel faces, and an investment-cast stainless steel, twin-plate fork crown (Long Shen).

Braze-ons include: three sets of reinforced stainless steel water bottle bosses (front of seat tube, top and bottom of down tube); front and rear rack mounts; internal stainless steel light wiring guides; non-drive-side seat stay pump-pegs; drive-side stainless steel spare spoke carrier (acts as chain stay guard too); stainless steel front dérailleur hanger; stainless steel dérailleur cable stops; stainless steel chain hanger; center-pull brake mounts and rear brake cable hanger; and, a stainless steel internal top tube rear brake cable guide.

The frame is designed to be used with the included handmade, color-matched 4130 CrMo threadless stem and tubular 4130 CrMo/stainless steel front rack and decaleur. The front rack has an integrated light mount and internal wiring to the hub dynamo.

This frame is built for longevity: all lugs are hand-shaped and -fitted; the frame is assembled one tube at a time to minimize residual stress from the heating/cooling cycle and to minimize the otherwise consequent need for cold-setting. With the exception of the seat stay caps, the frame is low-temperature silver-brazed to also minimize heating-cooling cycle-induced residual stresses and to allow for long-term repairability in case of mishaps; the stainless steel seat stay caps are attached using nickel-bronze brazing filler for added strength and resistance to under-cutting from the polishing process.

The fork crown and seat stay caps are polished to a mirror-like finish.

The handmade direct-clamp stem has an integrated light switch that works with the internally routed light and dynamo wiring.

As with every Domínguez frame, the frame, fork, stem, rack, and decaleur are immersed in a heated zinc-phosphate rust inhibitor prior to painting to ensure longevity of these assemblies.

The frame and fork are finished in metallic dark red “Dark Cherry” polyurethane paint with contrasting pinkish-white paint on the head and seat tubes, stem, rack, and decaleur. The beautiful paint is accented by the mirror-like polish of the stainless steel fork crown, head tube lugs, and chain stay caps – complemented by the clear-anodized (silver) aluminum Campagnolo components and the polished aluminum Paul and Phil Wood components.

Components

This bicycle is equipped with high-quality components, primarily from Campagnolo, Paul, and Phil Wood.

The wheels are hand-built by Paul Wyganowski using a polished Phil Wood sealed-bearing rear hub, Schmidt polished dynamo front hub, Sapim double-butted stainless steel spokes, and Grand Bois Papillon polished aluminum rims. The durable and light-weight wheels are fitted with Campagnolo Record (ca. 2004) quick-release skewers. High-quality, supple René Herse Babyshoe Pass 650b x 42mm (39mm actual width) tires provide an exceptionally smooth, comfortable, and sure-footed ride over varied road surfaces.

The gear ratios provide 2.5 to 9.4 meters development (31.6 to 118.2 gear inches), which is suitable for rolling hills and some challenging climbs; for anyone moderately fit or wanting to become moderately fit.

The drivetrain is composed of SRAM Apex (PG-1050) 10-cog cassette (11-28-tooth) connected by a Wipperman (10S0) chain to the Campagnolo Centaur 34/50-tooth chainrings fitted to the 175mm Campagnolo Centaur crankset, providing smooth, dependable shifting and power transmission. The integrated stainless steel, hollow axle rides on sealed bearings in external Campagnolo Record cups.

Shifting is accomplished from the aluminum Campagnolo Centaur ErgoPower brake-shift lever controls which opperate a braze-on Campagnolo Chorus front dérailleur, a short-cage Campagnolo Chorus rear dérailleur, and a set of polished aluminum Paul Components center-pull brakes. A Jtek Shiftmate ensures smooth, reliable shifting with the Campagnolo shifters and SRAM cassette. The brake levers are very comfortable for most hand sizes. The brake levers give excellent brake feel and modulation; the stopping power of the brakes is exceptionally good.

The rider contact points are: extremely smooth-turning and reliable Campagnolo Chorus Pro-Fit pedals (Look cleat bolt pattern) for the feet; a Brooks Cambium (C17) saddle for the rear, supported by a classic Campagnolo Nuovo Record seatpost. Profile Design synthetic cork tape for the handlebars nicely cushion the hands. Handlebars are Nitto Randonneur (B136AA) (42cm width x 26.0mm clamping diameter) attached to a color-matched, handmade direct-clamp stem. The headset is a Campagnolo Record for 1” threadless steerer tubes.

Campagnolo low-friction brake and dérailleur cable housings, Campagnolo brake and dérailleur cables, Honjo-Koken H80 aluminum fenders, color-matched handmade front rack and decaleur, color-matched handmade stem; Busch & Müller IQ CYO Senso Plus headlight (80 lux), Busch & Müller µ Designer fender-mount taillight, and three sets of Minoura aluminum alloy water bottle cages finish everything off.

Narrower or wider handlebars, shorter or longer stem options, alternative pedals and saddle, are all available at nominal extra cost.
